A White Winter Innsbruckian Wonderland

Whilst in Innsbruck, I was watching the snowing-melting cycles pass by from one day to another. In short, it was a white winter wonderland the one day and a green and cold cozy town the next. As you’ve seen lots of the green and warm cozy town previously, I thought it’d be interesting to look at Innsbruck from the snowy lens instead. It’s all about the snow, snow and more snow.

Ever walked around outside while it was snowing heavily? It was my first time on one of the nights in Innsbruck whilst returning back to the apartment after a very enjoyable dinner. It was already quite late and not many cars were driving on the roads in town. One of the Christmas markets was just across the road here.

As the previous picture didn’t quite show how heavily I thought it was snowing, here’s a better one. Surprisingly, I was not too cold as I walked the streets at night.

Within about five minutes, the road would turn white in snow, only to be swept away by pedestrians and random cars passing by. Hope that parked car covered in snow survived the night, haha!

Upon waking up the next day and looking out the window, I saw that McDonalds was a bit whiter than before! It was a weekend yet again when I took these pictures and what an ideal day for going into town.

The weather that Saturday was not too pleasant, it was cold and wet. It was a tough challenge to not slip while walking through the town as the snow had melted and turned to ice! You could not even see the mountains that provided the backdrop to the Altstadt tower! Nevertheless, the thought of taking a stroll outside was more pleasant than staying in an apartment all day and I decided to make the most of my time.

Looks like everyone had the same idea. Tourism never stops in Innsbruck and locals will also use the weekend opportunity to take care of some last minute Christmas shopping.

Saw this vehicle on Maria-Theresien street sprinkling salt to deice and roads and provide us with a safer surface (so put those ice skating shoes away because they’re not needed). Must be hard on the driver to navigate through massive crowds at a fairly moderate pace! This winter, availability of salt seemed to have been a major concern in several countries because of the massive snowfall that we had ever since I arrived. I know that Frankfurt airport at one point had actually run out of salt (correct me if I am wrong, but I think I saw a news report on this).

When I say wet, I truly mean wet. If the snow weren’t there, you’d think it had stormed through town. Deciding that I needed some food, I thought I’d go check Sillpark for anything that could be of interest.

Designated bicycle parking is well marked, but also quite obviously not covered by a roof, wouldn’t you say? :) If you have a good eye, you’ll also be able to make out how thick the layer of snow is.

Given the weather, you’d think it’d be quite good to have one of these sleighs with you at all times. You can buy them in any sport shop around the town. Managed to ride these on two occasions during my stay in Austria. It was a lot of fun and I’d recommend everyone to try them, especially down a mountain. There are some designated tracks up in the alps that cater for this. You can rent the sleighs for a small fee and get to the top of the hill via cable car.

Within time, I warmed up to the idea of walking to town along the Inn River instead of taking the bus and did so on one of the nights. With the beautiful lighting, you’d truly think that you are in a White Winter Wonderland (if only the river froze over now as well, haha, we might have a problem).

Just thought I’d add this to the collection to give you an idea of how the mountains look like since the skies did not favour me taking pictures the Saturday before. I guess the key impressions I took away from enjoying the winter weather was that I’d much prefer walking through town when it is snowing rather than raining. Even though I was told that snow doesn’t normally fall in the early winter period, it certainly was a pleasant experience.
